Nice collar... NOT

"Well, I'm not very happy at the moment."

"I went for a big run the other day at the Village - we have our special fenced-in 'off-lead' area - and I found some different-looking grass, so naturally I rolled and rolled and rolled in it (as you do). Next thing I know, I'm feeling very itchy. VERY itchy, indeed. So I started scratching. And scratching and scratching and scratching and it got very sore very quickly."

Me with my 'collar'

"So I have 'the collar' on me and I can't scratch it any more. But the good news is that it's not itching as much and it's not as sore as it was, so I guess that's good, although it looks really dumb. My friend Doug, the vet, said I just had a small allergy reaction to the grass."

"I'm still training the staff here at the Village to do what I tell them; like when I want a treat, I wag my tail, droop my ears, lower my head, look at them and then sit down in front of them. Works almost every time. Some staff are better trained than others, but I don't have time to train them all."

"And now I have to start all over again, because today I left the Village to go live with my new foster family. I've met them already, when they came into the SPCA to have a talk to Alison, our Foster Programme Co-ordinator. Alison thinks they're a nice family and so do I, although it's going to be hard work starting their training from scratch. Gee, a girls' work is never done!"

Tracy takes me around the offices to
say "au revoir" to everyone

"Thanks to you all for your concern and emails and letters and donations. Certainly keeps me busy, reading them all. "That's it from me for now - I'm off on my new adventure! I'll keep you updated with how things are going though, don't worry."

"See ya!!"

Eve and her friends...

Thanks for all your wonderful donations and emails to Eve. She is a star and yet she remains down-to-earth and completely unaffected by her rise to stardom :)
Just chillin'
Eve continues in her recuperation. She's now achieved a body weight of 19kg, which is absolutely fantastic.

As you can see from the photos, she's getting better each day and filling out very well. Her cheeky personality is becoming more and more apparent, too. She loves life and is very friendly with most people. Her best friend at the moment is Chester, who she's having a friendly scrap with in these photos.

Chester gives Eve a friendly chew...

Because we're at capacity with animals, Eve spent a day in the Canine Attendants office and they were given a reminder that they need tidy their office a little better when Eve got a little bored and decided that the stash of soft toys (she LOVES soft toys!) was hers and she proceeded to tear them to bits and fling them all around the office!

Needless to say, our Canine Attendants are now more careful ensuring things get put away properly...

Eve's the one with the collar...

She's been forgiven for that little transgression and has started some basic training, too. She'll quickly sit for treats, she knows her name, she walks reasonably well on a leash and gets better all the time...

A lot of people have generously donated to help pay for Eve's treatment, care, and towards a Prosecution Fund. On behalf of Eve and the animals like her, we at the Auckland SPCA thank you very much.

Sunday News story

"The woman being hunted by the SPCA over starved puppy Eve says she's no mongrel" [more...]

Our friends at the Sunday News newspaper decided to do some of their own investigations into Eve's story and managed to locate Eve's 'owner'.

Eve the movie star

"Hi... Eve here again. Well, it seems they were listening to me, because I've got my own movie now! Check it out right here..."

"It shows some photos of when I was found by my friend, Inspector Todd, after being soooo long without food or water. I couldn't actually stand on my legs, because I didn't have any strength left, but he was nice and he carried me away from that awful place and he brought me to the Auckland SPCA Animal Village."

"Now I'm feeling soooo much better! My friends at the SPCA have helped me a lot and I don't know all their names but I do know that I won't forget them."

The long awaited update - from Eve herself!

"Well, sorry to have taken so long to update my blog, but life as a dog at the SPCA has been pretty busy! Where do I start?"

"Last weekend I went home with Brigid, one of the wonderful staff here at the Animal Village, for a bit of a break from the routine here at the Village. It was great fun! Brigid's property is pretty big and her dogs were pleased to see me and wanted to play all day long, so we spent most of the weekend racing around playing tag with each other and chasing toys and balls. It was great, although I did have to rest a bit more often than everyone else, because I'm not used to all this exercise..."

"This week, my friends in the Auckland SPCA Canine Team weighed me (again!) and it seems that my weight is just on 17kg. They think that this is a bit of a milestone, because it means that I've reached 'foster weight' and I can go to my temporary foster home, with Tracy (another staff member)."

"Tracy's been very nice to me and we've been going for walks around the Village every day. She's not all that responsive to my training methods but I'm sure if I persist, Tracy will soon be doing everything I want her to do."

"I got some new toys, too. One of them quacks like a duck when I bite it and it's a bit scary, so I leave it alone now. I play tug with my rope-toy with the staff! I can pull really hard, but I end up letting the staff win, otherwise I think they get a bit miffed..!"

"I keep telling everyone to take some more photos of me for my blog, so hopefully we'll have some more on here shortly."

"Gotta go. Almost dinner time... see ya!"

Eve

PERSON SOUGHT BY SPCA AUCKLAND TO HELP WITH ENQUIRIES

A very special dog arrived at the Auckland SPCA’s Animal Village on 24th December aptly named by SPCA staff, Eve. Eve had been locked under her owners’ house and left to starve for at least 5 weeks without food or water.

SPCA Auckland are now seeking information as to the whereabouts of a PAULETTE TAKI whose last know address was in Glen Innes, Auckland.

SPCA Auckland General Manager David Lloyd-Barker said, “We feel that it would be very useful in progressing this case into the treatment of Eve that we are able to speak to Miss TAKI as soon as possible who may be able to assist us in our enquires.”

Mr Lloyd-Barker asks that Miss TAKI or any member of the public who may have details of Miss TAKI’s whereabouts to contact SPCA Auckland in complete confidence on 09 2567311.

NZ Herald story on Eve

Abandoned dog becomes a star
12:00PM Monday January 07, 2008
By Kate Chapman [http://www.nzherald.co.nz/]

Abandoned dog Eve, the victim of what the SPCA describes as one of the worst ever cases of neglect, is now extremely popular with offers for adoption from as far away as Canada.

Eve, named because she was found by the SPCA on Christmas Eve, was found locked under a state house in Glenn Innes, Auckland, surviving on insects and her own waste. The 11-month-old ridgeback cross weighed just 10kg when she was found, every bone was visible and she could barely stand [more...]

Eve continues to grow...

Things are looking up for Eve

Well, Eve tipped the scales today at an astounding 16.3 kilograms. This is an incredible improvement for her in the two weeks that she's been in our care since being rescued. Her original body weight was 10 kilograms on arrival at our Animal Village.

Our friends at the New Zealand Herald ran a good article on Eve's plight and the Sunday News online version of the story is here.

Ok, I'm bored now... let's go play!

Once again, Auckland SPCA thanks everyone who has been sending in donations via our website for Eve's care and the prosecution fund for her and the other animals in our care. We really appreciate it, since we receive no automatic government funding for our Society. If you would like to help us with a donation, there are several ways you can do so:

  • Subscribe to our HOPE® automatic pledge programme online, where an automatic donation is made once a month via your credit card.

Food, glorious food

Foster Co-ordinator Alison Travaglia says g'day to Eve

We continue to be astounded by Eve's improvements. She is steadily putting on more weight and growing in confidence as each day passes.

Her friendly and gentle nature towards everyone she meets makes her a firm favourite with Staff, Volunteers and visitors to the Auckland SPCA alike.

We are swamped with messages of support from all over New Zealand and further afield, too, including the USA and UK.

She's becoming quite famous, thanks in no small way to the support we've received from our friends in the media, who have highlighted Eve's plight.

Waddya mean 'hold still for the camera'?

As you can see from the photos, she still needs to fill-out some more, but we'll continue her treatments and we think she's going to make a great recovery.

A New Year brings a New Beginning for Eve...

Eve continues to improve. She weighed-in at 13.7 kilograms today - a huge improvement on her 10 kg when she arrived at the SPCA Village on Christmas Eve - still underweight, but she's slowly coming right. We've discovered that she's a little 'head-shy' with some males; i.e. lifting a hand near her head makes her cringe slightly. We think it's a learned behaviour from expecting the worst whenever a hand is raised near her.

She's quickly learning that here at the Village, our Staff and Volunteers are only raising their hand to give her a scratch behind the ear or under her chin...

Eve doing the rounds of the Village

Here Eve pays a visit to our office, while 'doing the rounds' of the Village on one of her many walks. This is done partly because it's good socialisation for Eve to meet as many friendly faces as possible, but mostly it's done because everyone at the Village keeps asking, "How's Eve doing today? Is she good? How's her weight? Still improving?", and so on. We found that it was much easier for her to just have a walk around and show everyone :)

"Okay, I've seen everyone in this office, gotten heaps of pats
and treats and I'm bored with these guys, so now it's time to go
find someone else to make a fuss over me, please..."

"Good morning everyone. Sorry to keep you waiting..."

Happy New Year to Eve...

We at the Auckland SPCA think that 2007 is a year that Eve will want to forget.

Trapped in her 'prison', under a house with no food or water.

Fortunately for her, she was found just in the nick of time by Auckland SPCA Inspector Todd Neal, who received a call from a concerned member of the public.

See excellent television coverage of Eve's story from our friends at TV-3 here.

Email are flooding in, offering assistance and good wishes to Eve and Auckland SPCA Staff & Volunteers who care for the 18,000+ animals we receive each year.

Eve's condition continues to improve. Her colouring is better, and every day she's eating a little more.

Any donations towards the running of our animal shelter would be greatly appreciated and you can make a generic donate online here, or a specific donation towards Eve's Appeal here. This will be used for both caring for our furry friends here at the Village, plus it will assist our legal costs in bringing prosecution against Eve's 'owners'.

It may surprise you to learn the we receive no automatic government funding for caring for the animals at our shelter; nor are we funded for costs of prosecution cases!
